SpaceMobile (ASTS) has announced a major step forward in its spectrum strategy. The company has entered into an agreement to acquire global S-Band spectrum priority rights held under the International Telecommunication Union, enhancing its ability to deliver broadband services directly from space to users across the globe.

The acquisition involves Mobile Satellite Services spectrum in the 1980–2010 MHz and 2170–2200 MHz frequency bands for low Earth orbit use. These mid-band S-Band frequencies would complement AST SpaceMobile’s existing global 3GPP cellular spectrum holdings and its planned L-Band initiatives in North America. Together, the combination significantly broadens AST’s global service potential, with the company targeting data transmission speeds of up to 120 Mbps for unmodified mobile devices.

According to AST, the total transaction consideration is $64.5 million, with $26 million to be paid at closing and the remainder tied to performance milestones. The company has the flexibility to pay in either cash or stock. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions.

AST’s satellite architecture and proprietary chipsets were designed with S-Band capabilities in mind, positioning the company to move quickly once regulatory approvals are obtained. This acquisition would provide AST and its mobile network operator partners with a path to expand service offerings in many more countries around the world, improving network capacity and reach in both commercial and government applications.
