Supporting the Army’s Medium-Range Reconnaissance Initiative

The award falls under the Army’s Company-Level Directed Requirement (CLDR) Small Uncrewed Aircraft System program, Tranche 2, which is designed to rapidly deliver field-ready drone capabilities to brigade combat teams.

The program is part of the Army’s broader Medium Range Reconnaissance (MRR) initiative, aimed at enhancing real-time intelligence and situational awareness at the unit level.

Unlike large, centralized drone systems, these platforms are intended to be:

  • Operated directly by frontline units
  • Rapidly deployable in contested environments
  • Flexible across reconnaissance and targeting missions

VAPOR CLE: Compact, Modular, and Battlefield-Ready

At the center of the contract is AeroVironment’s VAPOR CLE, an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition. Key capabilities include:

  • Up to two hours of flight endurance
  • Payload capacity of up to 24 pounds, including sensors or munitions
  • Rapid deployment, with case-to-flight readiness in ~2 minutes
  • Ability to operate in extreme environments, including Arctic and maritime conditions

The system also features a modular, open-architecture design, allowing for quick integration of different payloads and mission configurations.
