FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Aug. 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America announced the continuation of its partnership with Healthy Seas, a nonprofit organization focused on ocean conservation. Hyundai's involvement will support four major underwater cleanup operations scheduled through the summer and fall, beginning with the cleanup of the Tuna Clipper (San Vito) wreck near Catalina Island. These missions aim to remove marine litter, helping restore vital habitats for seals, lobsters, torpedo rays, and purple hydrocorals, while improving safety and biodiversity at popular diving and fishing sites. The collected nylon fishing nets and other nylon waste are processed into ECONYL®, a regenerated nylon yarn used in new textile products.
"As we deepen our collaboration with Healthy Seas, Hyundai reaffirms its unwavering commitment to sustainability and ocean conservation," said Randy Parker, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. "By championing the preservation of marine ecosystems and supporting initiatives that promote a circular economy, we are advancing our vision of progress for humanity and taking meaningful action to ensure a healthier planet for future generations."
The renewed partnership commenced as Hyundai employees came together for a beach cleanup event at Huntington Beach State Park. Complementing this hands-on effort, Hyundai and Healthy Seas hosted an educational workshop at the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington Valley, where over 30 students participated in the "If the Ocean Could Speak" origami envelopes activity—an engaging program designed to inspire awareness about the interconnectedness of human actions and marine ecosystems. Through crafting origami envelopes, students reflected on the vital role oceans play in our world and the urgent challenges facing marine life, fostering a sense of stewardship and a deeper understanding of why ocean conservation matters.
This marks the first year education is formally integrated into the U.S. partnership activities, reflecting a shared commitment to nurturing a new generation of ocean defenders. Through meaningful and creative learning experiences, students are empowered to care for marine life and encouraged to share this awareness with their families and communities, amplifying the message of ocean protection beyond the classroom. The educational component is a key part of Hyundai's commitment to sustainability and the future of our planet.
Hyundai's collaboration with Healthy Seas underscores its ongoing commitment to sustainability as part of its broader corporate social responsibility initiative, Hyundai Hope. By prioritizing ocean conservation, Hyundai highlights its dedication to fostering more sustainable marine ecosystems and supporting the development of a circular economy.
Healthy Seas is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the removal of marine waste and education, with a particular focus on discarded fishing nets, to promote healthier oceans. It works to address ocean pollution and mitigate risks posed to marine life by these hazards, collaborating with partners to recycle recovered materials into new products.
"This third year of partnership with Hyundai Motor America shows how shared values can lead to deepening impact," said Veronika Mikos, director, Healthy Seas Foundation. "We're proud to expand our collaboration to include education, empowering young people to become ocean stewards and ambassadors for change. Protecting the seas means engaging not just divers or scientists, but entire communities, starting with the next generation."
Since 2021, Hyundai and Healthy Seas have collaborated on a range of impactful projects, expanding their efforts from Europe to South Korea in 2022 and the United States in 2023. Together, they have carried out beach cleanups and underwater diving missions in key hotspots, involving communities, volunteers, media, influencers, and local representatives. Their efforts have extended to tackling large-scale marine pollution, such as abandoned fish farms in four locations across Greece and developing awareness-raising initiatives to support industry transformation and systemic change.
Hyundai's additional environmental initiatives include a long-term partnership with One Tree Planted, a nonprofit dedicated to global reforestation, and the worldwide 'IONIQ Forest' project, which supports reforestation, afforestation, and biodiversity around the globe. These initiatives demonstrate Hyundai's comprehensive approach to sustainability and its dedication to making a positive impact on the environment.
