Momentus Inc. (NASDAQ: MNTS) surged nearly 100% today after announcing it has completed a NASA-funded study to launch advanced robotics technologies into space as part of a broader push to enable autonomous missions and orbital servicing capabilities.

Under NASA’s Flight Opportunities program, Momentus designed a mission concept using its Vigoride orbital service vehicle to test autonomous robotic maneuvers in microgravity. The study also included a commercialization plan to prove that space robotics can be deployed in economically viable ways, with applications ranging from satellite assembly and debris removal to lunar surface operations.

NASA is now evaluating Momentus for a larger follow-on mission, expected to be awarded in September, which would involve an in-orbit demonstration of these robotics systems. Momentus is one of two companies in contention for the contract.

The Vigoride spacecraft, Momentus’ flagship orbital platform, is already used for transporting and deploying payloads for communications, missile tracking, and science missions. This potential NASA demonstration could mark a major milestone in validating autonomous robotics for both government and commercial customers.
