Walmart is making a bold move into the EV charging market, embarking on an ambitious plan to establish an expansive, proprietary fast-charging network across thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations by 2030. Currently, it relies on third-party providers like Electrify America and EVgo for approximately 1,300 fast-charging stalls at around 280 sites—so this shift marks a significant pivot toward owning and controlling its infrastructure.

Harnessing its vast footprint—over 5,200 locations in the U.S. and proximity to 90% of Americans—Walmart’s in-house network leverages both Alpitronic HYC400 and ABB 400 kW DC fast chargers, supporting CCS1 and Tesla’s NACS connectors. Customers will initiate and pay for charging through the Walmart app, and Walmart+ members may benefit from future discounts.

Choosing to own and operate its chargers gives Walmart strategic advantages in flexibility, pricing, customer support, and maintenance. On-site staff can resolve issues faster than remote networks, enhancing reliability and customer experience.

Investor Perspective

This initiative signals much more than infrastructure expansion—it’s a play for strategic dominance in EV retail:

  • Massive Network Potential
Replicating what took Tesla years to build, Walmart could rapidly deploy tens of thousands of fast-charging stalls at locations that are already part of millions of customers’ daily routines.
  • Convenience-Driven Value
By integrating charging into the shopping experience, Walmart fosters longer store visits and elevated foot traffic—offering synergistic gains in both retail and EV charging ecosystems.
  • Better Pricing Strategy
Committed to its “everyday low price” philosophy, Walmart aims to undercut typical EV charging prices, easing the “charging equity” challenge and appealing particularly to drivers without home charging access.
  • Competitive Advantage
As major players like Tesla re-evaluate charger buildouts, and startups and automakers race to scale infrastructure, Walmart’s asset-rich, vertically integrated model positions it as a formidable contender in the charging space.
